Very friendly and helpful staff, one of who spoke English very well. Nice grounds with a comfortable breakfast area, patio and pool. Provided same day laundry service at a good price. Breakfast was basic but fresh. Internet worked well in the room.
First of all the description of the hotel is incorrect. The walk to the downtown square was around 30 minutes, not 10. Our room was very basic and a far cry from the pictures shown (definitely did not have a flat screen TV as described). The worst part was the bathroom which had a bad odor throughout our stay. And then on the last night we were there the smell got even worse to that of rotten eggs. It was putrid and we had a hard time using the bathroom at all that night. The beds were very basic (just metal cots) and the sheets and towels definitely had better days. There was also a buzzer linked to the front door bell in the room which was annoying. For our last night in Santa Cruz we found a nicer hotel in the city center (across from the Cathedral) for an slightly cheaper price!

The manager, Tom, was really kind and helpful.
If anything, I would have to say that the bathroom should be better.
